Finance Director

Location: South West / Hybrid
Contract: Interim initially, could become permanent
Start: ASAP
Day Rate: Competitive, depending on experience

Vargo Group is working with a profitable, privately owned SME to recruit an experienced Finance Director. This will initially be on a day-rate contract bit could become permanent for the right candidate.

The immediate priority is to get full control and visibility across the group finance function. This includes establishing clean month-end reporting for each entity, improving financial processes and building a robust monthly reporting pack for the group board.

The business has a medium-term objective to prepare for a potential sale within the next two years, so this role will be central to improving reporting quality, controls, financial transparency and board-level decision support.

Key Responsibilities

• Take ownership of finance across the group and associated entities
• Establish clean, reliable month-end reporting for each business
• Build a monthly group board reporting pack
• Improve financial controls, processes and reporting discipline
• Provide clear visibility on performance, cash flow, profitability and working capital
• Support the directors with commercial insight and financial decision-making
• Work with external advisors where required
• Help prepare the business for a potential sale within the next two years

The Person

We are looking for a hands-on Interim FD who can quickly bring structure, control and clarity to a multi-entity SME environment.

You will need:

• Qualified accountant: ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent
• Proven FD, Interim FD or senior FC experience
• Strong SME finance background
• Experience improving month-end, management reporting and board packs
• Ability to work across multiple entities or group structures
• Strong controls, forecasting, cash flow and reporting experience
• Commercial judgement and confidence working with owners/directors
• Availability at short notice or on a quick start

Experience preparing a business for sale, investment, due diligence or exit-readiness would be highly relevant.
