Human Resources Manager: Job Description
Location: Reading, RG30 1DZ
Salary: £45,000 - £55,000 plus share options
Reports to: Founder and CEO
Working hours: 37.5 hours, Monday - Friday
About BigSis
BigSis (www.bigsis.tech), a UK start-up, is applying robotics and artificial intelligence to transform
the production of sterile male insects, which are used for chemical-free control of pest insects. BigSis
has developed a pilot automated production line and is now focused on scaling to millions of insects
per week.
The company has two sites in Reading, UK and we are now commissioning our first dedicated
production unit. We have about 35 permanent staff, including shift workers, and about 25
temporary and seasonal staff, some of whom work in customer fields. The workforce is expected to
continue to evolve as the company scales domestically and internationally.
The role
The Human Resource Manager reports directly to the CEO, is a key member of the leadership team
and has full responsibility for the HR and payroll function. The role is office-based (not hybrid) and
will oversee and develop HR policies and processes as well as ensuring efficient administration of
payroll, recruitment and staff training. The individual should play a central role in creating a vibrant
company culture and supporting the rapid development of this exciting start-up.
Responsibilities
• Day-to-day operation of the company’s HR function
• Develop clear HR policies, including to reflect law changes, and ensure policy awareness
• Administer payroll working with our third party provider
• Support managers in the recruit and retention of excellent staff
• Maintain a smooth onboarding process
• Support managers in workplace health and safety compliance
• Lead the performance and salary review processes
• Train, counsel, and coach staff
• Handle workplace investigations, disciplinary, and termination procedures
• Resolve conflicts through positive and professional mediation

Qualifications and experience
Essential
• University degree
• At least 3 years’ human resources experience in a relevant commercial setting
• Solid understanding of UK employment law including regarding privacy and health and
safety at work
• Good knowledge of contemporary HR policies and processes
• Strong knowledge of payroll processes supported by high level of numeracy
• Experience in educating and coaching staff
• Experience in conflict resolution, disciplinary processes, and workplace investigations
• Competency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
Desirable
• Experience with YouManage software platform
• Experience with Moorepay payroll platform
• Exposure to working with international subsidiaries
• Full UK driving licence
